In preparation for a manual on the lichens of Minnesota numerous new collections have been made in many parts of the state and most of Fink's Minnesota collections have been re- studied. There are about 35,000 Minnesota collections in the herbarium and the lichen flora has increased to over 700 species. Michigan Association of Conservation Districts Michigan's 78 Conservation Districts are the local providers of natural resource management services that help our citizens conserve their lands and our environment for a cleaner, healthier, economically stronger Michigan. The fungi that form lichens are a large and diverse group, mostly composed of Ascomycetes (sac fungi), but including a few Basidiomycetes (mushroom-producing fungi). the thallus (lobules). Some lichens have a frosted appearance due to the presence of pruina, which are calcium oxalate crystals grouped in such a way they reflect light. Other lichens have holes in the cortex called pseudocyphellae. Habitats Lichens can grow in almost any habitat, but are most common in forests, bogs, sand barrens, cliff faces Reproductive Strategies in Lichens. Lichens employ two divergent strategies of reproduction, a sexual method through spore propagation and a derivative asexual strategy based on systems Punctelia rudecta (Ach) Krog is a common blue-green foliose lichen found on hardwood trees and bark in eastern North America (Fig 1, 2).This species is easily identified the light underside of the thallus, the relatively large lobes at the edges of the colony, and the small white pores present on the top of the thallus that are distinctive of the genus (Fig. 3, 4). The lichens here may be hundreds of years old, and some species grow as little as one millimeter per year! Thus, special care should be taken to avoid damaging them when walking over terrain where they are growing. Lichens are composed of three elements: algae, fungus, and cyanobacteria.
